The Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit is investigating an incident where an ATM unit was compromised. The Windsor Police Service attended the TD Bank ATM located in the 3100 block of Howard Ave. at 1:20 p.m. on Sunday August 9, 2009 for a report of an ATM that had been tampered with. Upon arrival, the officer was met by Devonshire Mall security who directed the officer to the ATM. The officer immediately recognized that the ATM had been compromised as an electronic device had become separated from the unit and was laying on the floor. Further investigation revealed that a small camera had been inserted inside the "shield" covering the PIN pad which would allow for a PIN number to be recorded. A "card reader" was also seized by officers at the scene. It should be noted that the memory card inserted into the card reader by the suspect(s) was still attached to the device which indicates that no personal information was obtained by the suspect(s). Investigators are confident that no personal information was compromised as a result of this tampering incident. The Windsor Police are reminding people that when using a PIN Pad at a point of purchase or an ATM to cover the PIN Pad with their hand even if there is a "shield" in place. In this instance, the camera was placed inside the shield using two sided tape. Anyone with any information regarding this incident or any other PIN Pad fraud is asked to call the Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit at 519-2550-6700 ext 4330 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477) - 30 -
