WPS TO SHOWCASE BLAST MITIGATION TENT

The Windsor Police Service Explosive Disposal Unit recently took possession of a piece of equipment known as a "BLAST MITIGATION TENT".  This item is primarily a blast containment system designed to mitigate an explosive blast and contain fragmentation within its enclosure.  This item has become standard Explosive Disposal Unit equipment deployed by most major Police Services in Canada. The device may also used as a decontaminant designed to eliminate a chemical or biological component of an improvised explosive device thereby reducing the risk of injury, death or damage.

The tent was purchased with the assistance of the "Joint Emergency Preparedness Program" (JEPP) grant funds.  The Government of Canada established "JEPP" to enhance the national capability to manage all types of emergencies and ensure a reasonably uniform emergency response recovery capacity across Canada.

The WPS Explosive Disposal Unit is extending an invitation to the media to observe a demonstration of the Blast Mitigation Tent.  The demonstration will take place on Thursday October 15, 2009 at the Windsor Police Training Facility located behind the Tilston Armouries located at 4007 Sandwich St. in Windsor.  The demonstration will  take place at 1:00 p.m.  It is recommended that you arrive at 12:30 p.m.  Information regarding the system will be provided at this time.

Preliminary inquiries may be directed to S/Sgt. David Cassady at 519-255-6700 ext 4008.
