SUSPECT CHARGED AFTER BEATING

Windsor Police have a man in custody after an assault on a woman early this morning in a downtown apartment building.  At approximately 2:00 a.m. this morning, a 23 year old woman met a man at a licenced establishment on Wyandotte St W.  The two left and ordered some food at a downtown restaurant, then the woman invited the man over to her apartment in the 100 block of Caron Ave to eat.  After eating, the man began to make sexual advances toward the woman who refused those advances.  The man insisted on having sex with the woman and when she refused again, he began to beat her about the head with his fists and choked her to the point of unconsciousness.  The man then removed some of the woman's clothing and continued to beat her.  The woman was able to break free of the man and ran to the building manager's apartment where police were called.

The woman was transported to hospital where she is currently being treated for severe facial injuries. Those injuries are not life threatening.  Uniformed officers responded to the apartment but upon their arrival, the suspect had left.  While police were searching the apartment, the building manager observed a man matching the suspect description on surveillance video walking in the underground parking garage attempting to get out.  The garage is secure and requires a swipe card to enter and exit therefore not allowing the suspect to flee.  The manager notified officers who attended the garage and arrested the suspect without incident.

Ali DIRANI - 30 years of Windsor is charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault and Choking. He has been remanded into custody.
