Windsor Police have laid a charge under the province's Stunt Driving Legislation after a vehicle was clocked travelling 123 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone yesterday morning in the city's east side. At 9:50 a.m. on Thursday morning, a WPS Traffic Enforcement Officer was conducting stationary radar speed enforcement in the 1200 block of Lauzon Rd. when he observed a 2001 black Saturn travelling southbound on Lauzon Rd. approaching his location at a high rate of speed. The officer locked in the speed on his radar device and was able to stop the Saturn on Lauzon Rd. just south of Tranby St. after it had stopped for the traffic light at this intersection. The vehicle contained a 19 year old male driver and a an 18 year old female passenger. When the officer questioned the driver about the excessive speed, he replied that he was late to pick up a rental car. He also advised the officer that he knew he was speeding but he only thought he was going 90 km/h. Lauzon Rd. has a posted speed limit of 50 km/h in this area. The vehicle was clocked travelling 73 km/h over the posted limit. The vehicle was impounded for a minimum 7 day period and the accused's driver's licence has automatically been suspended for a minimum 7 days as per the requirements of the legislation. The accused received a summons to appear in court at a later date. - 30 - |
