Windsor Police have laid a charge of Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle after a collision involving a police cruiser early Sunday morning in the city's downtown. At 4:45 a.m. yesterday, two officers in a marked Windsor Police cruiser were stopped on the south side of the intersection of Janette Ave at University Ave. investigating the occupant of a vehicle also parked on Janette Ave. The officers had just stopped the cruiser and and were still inside. The cruiser was facing south on Janette Ave. and had its emergency flashing lights activated. As the cruiser came to a stop, officers observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on University Ave coming over the crest of the train overpass at Caron Ave. The officers heard the sound of screeching tires as the vehicle attempted to stop. The officers observed the vehicle skidding toward them and remained in the cruiser as the front bumper of the vehicle struck the cruiser on the passenger side. The officers were able to exit the cruiser and approached the driver of the 2000 Honda Civic. The driver was not injured and officers detected an odour of alcohol on his breath as he spoke. Officers placed the man under arrest for Impaired Operation of a Motor vehicle. Officers also asked the driver if he was under the influence of anything else other than alcohol. The driver responded by stating "yeah...I had some weed and did some cocaine earlier...why?" Each vehicle sustained approximately $2500 each worth of damage. The accused was not injured as a result of the collision. Both officers received minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment. A 29 year old Windsor man is facing charges of Impaired Driving and Exceeding the Legal Limit of Alcohol. Three additional drivers were also charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Exceeding the Legal Limit of Alcohol during the course of the weekend in the city of Windsor. - 30 -
