ASSAULT SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER HIDING IN BUSHES

Windsor Police have a suspect in custody after a neighbor called in a report of an assault yesterday morning.  At 11:30 a.m. on July 12, 2010 uniformed officers responded to an apartment in the 1300 block of Assumption Street.  A male visiting a tenant in the building approached officers and advised them that the suspect and female had now left the building.  The male further advised that upon his arrival this morning he noted that the outside security door was left opened.  Once he entered the building he heard what sounded like muffled crying and screaming from a female's voice.  Fearing someone was in trouble the male knocked on an apartment door at which time he was met by a female whose face was covered in blood.  The female proceeded to run out of the apartment and the male now stood face to face with the suspect who was holding a knife in his hand.  The suspect threatened the male and went back into the apartment. The male notified the police while the suspect fled the building.

The victim then returned to the scene and informed officers that earlier in the day she was in her apartment with her ex boyfriend.  She had asked him several times to leave however he refused and a verbal argument ensued.  The suspect then grabbed the victim by her mouth, threw her onto the couch and continued to place his hands over her mouth making it difficult for her to breath.  This struggle continued for approximately 10 minutes until the male knocked on the apartment to check on her well being.  This provided the victim with an opportunity to flee from the apartment.

Uniformed officers searched the area and at 12:35 p.m. located the suspect hiding under some  bushes in the 1200 block of Riverside Drive East.  The suspect attempted to flee from the officer by walking into the Detroit River.  After brief negotiations with the suspect, the officer managed to talk him into surrendering.  He was then taken into custody.

EMS attended and treated the victim who suffered from minor facial injuries as a result of the attack.

A 21 year old Windsor male is facing charges of Assault, Choking, Unlawfully in a Dwelling, Assault with a Weapon and Uttering Threats.  He will appear in court  today to answer to these charges.
