| ALERT CITIZENS HELP NAB ROBBERY SUSPECTS | ||
Windsor Police arrested two robbery suspects yesterday afternoon with the assistance of three alert citizens. At 3:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon, uniformed officers responded to a report of a robbery of a convenience store in the 6000 block of Tecumseh Rd. E. Upon speaking with the owner of the store, it was learned that a lone male suspect had entered the store minutes earlier, brandished a black handgun and demanded that the owner hand over money and cigarettes. The owner complied with his request and handed the suspect a quantity of cash from the till and cigarettes, but when the suspect demanded the victim's purse, she grabbed it and fled the store through a back door where she ran to a nearby business and called police. The owner was not physically harmed during the robbery. As the suspect fled the store quickly through the front door, a man passed him in the doorway who was going in to make a purchase and noticed the store to be empty and the cash register not to be in its normal position. Immediately recognizing the situation, the man ran outside to see if he could see the suspect. He spoke to another man and woman who had been seated in a van parked in the lot next to the store and advised them of the robbery. Moments earlier, the couple had observed a suspicious Dodge Neon parked next to the store with a man seated in the driver's acting nervously and shading his face with his hand. The couple watched as another man later identified as the robbery suspect hurriedly approached the Neon and got into the passenger side. The vehicle then sped off west on Tecumseh Rd. After hearing of the robbery from the man, the couple drove also drove west on Tecumseh Rd in an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle which they did in the area of Tecumseh Rd at Ford Blvd. They were able to obtain the licence plate information and follow the suspect vehicle to a residence in the 1600 block of Aubin Rd where the passenger exited the vehicle and entered the house. The couple then returned to the scene of the robbery and provided police officers with this vital information. Minutes later, officers located the suspect vehicle at Tecumseh Rd at Central Ave. and arrested the driver. Officers then attended the residence in the 1600 block of Aubin Rd. and arrested the robbery suspect without incident. Officers executed a search warrant at the residence of the suspect resulting in the recovery of a replica handgun and a quantity of cigarettes. A 35 year old Windsor man is in custody and facing charges of Robbery with a Firearm and Possession of Property Obtained By Crime. A 52 year old Windsor man is facing a robbery charge. It should be noted that the assistance of these three alert citizens was instrumental in locating and arresting the two suspects responsible for this robbery.
