| MAN CHARGED IN WEST END ROBBERY | ||
Windsor Police have charged one man after a robbery occurred early this morning in the city's west end. At 1:40 a.m. this morning, uniformed officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of Sandwich St. for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. Prior to their arrival, officers received a description of the suspect responsible for the robbery and upon arriving in the 3100 block of Sandwich, they observed a man matching the description walking on the sidewalk in this location. While speaking with suspect, officers located the victim of the robbery inside the washroom of an entertainment establishment in the 3100 block of Sandwich St. The victim had sustained several puncture wounds to his face and head and was also complaining of pain to his chest, ribs and back. He was transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The victim advised the officers that he had parked his van in the parking lot of the establishment earlier in the evening and locked it before entering the bar. He also advised that the van contained a bicycle in the rear. The victim exited the establishment at 1:30 a.m. and and observed a man walking away from his van. Upon reaching his vehicle, he noticed that the doors were unlocked and his bicycle was gone. He immediately chased after the man he had observed seconds earlier and confronted him about the missing bike as the suspect reached the 200 block of Detroit St. As the victim approached the suspect, the suspect turned around and produced a screwdriver from his coat and began striking the victim with it about the head. The victim fell to the ground and the suspect continued to punch and kick him at the same time demanding the victim's money and threatening to kill him. The victim gave the suspect a small quantity of change from his pocket and the suspect walked away. The victim picked himself up and walked back to the establishment where he went into the washroom to check on his injuries. The suspect was placed under arrest for the robbery and a subsequent search of his person revealed a small screwdriver and a small quantity of change. Robert SAUMURE - 25 years of Windsor is charged with one count each of Robbery, Assault With A Weapon and Uttering Threats To Cause Death. He will appear in court today and will be remanded into custody. At the time of this release, the victim's bicycle is still missing. It is described as a "Rocky Mountain Element Race". It has a white frame and blue forks with a quick release rear axle. It also has "Ritchie" clip style pedals.
