Robbery Suspect Arrested

A Convenience store located in the 4900 block of Wyandotte Street East was robbed last night.  At 11:30 p.m., the suspect entered the store and approached the clerk on duty.  The suspect pointed a small black handgun at the clerk and demanded cash.

The clerk handed over a quantity of bills and the suspect demanded more.  The clerk then gave him some additional cash and threw a handful of toonies at him.  The suspect bent down to pick the toonies off the floor and the clerk grabbed him and attempted to disarm him.  The suspect broke free and when he saw the clerk pick up a baseball bat, he fled the store.

A short time after the robbery, officers spotted a man entering a taxi cab in the area.  They followed the taxi and pulled it over on Prado Street.  Officers ordered the passenger out of the vehicle and as he exited, loose bills fell from his lap.  He was arrested without incident. A starters pistol and bag of cash was found on the passenger seat of the taxi.

Shawn Cartwright, 34, of McGregor, will appear in court today, facing charges of Robbery and Using an Imitation Firearm While Committing an Indictable Offence.
